Bringing you the Best of Life: Pop Culture, Things We Like, Frugal Finds, Random Musings, Product Reviews, Movies and TV, and Words to Live By.

Welcome to our site! LifeLaurels is a lifestyle blog that aims to bring you the BEST of Life. We share all sorts of good finds, in the area of entertainment, pop culture, and living your best life. We'll write about stuff we watch, stuff we buy, stuff we covet, and stuff we enjoy. If it deserves Laurels, we'll talk about it here.

A laurel is a type of evergreen plant that was traditionally used to weave wreaths and crowns that were symbols of victory in Ancient Greece. Today, laurel is synonymous with achievement, and is used to denote honor or distinction. It is also the first name of this site's founder. Thus, instead of using stars, we rate in terms of laurels, with 5 laurels indicating something is fantastic, and one laurel meaning we did not like it so much.

We also have a Facebook Page where we share a LOT of motivating words and fun memes. And because everyone loves winning, we'll share links to contests and sweepstakes, where you can win fun prizes.

To find individual posts, please search the sidebar. Searching by "tags" can help you find what you seek. We also have various types of content sorted and linked on pages within this site. Use the nav bars to reach these pages.

Welcome to our virtual world, and thank you for coming! We hope you will enjoy your stay and come back frequently. You can use the contact form in the footer to reach out to us or offer feedback.

September 11: Never Forget

 Remembering 9-11

One of the Solemnest Days in American History

Like most Americans, I will never forget where I was when I first heard the news. I had spent all night in the ER, and they had just decided to admit me. They found me an empty hospital bed, but could not find a pillow. As I lay there waiting, my roommate had her TV on. I glanced over at the screen to see a plane crashing into the Twin Towers. I asked my roomie what movie she was watching. She replied "I'm watching The Today Show."

"I must be delirious," I commented. "I could swear I just saw a plane crashing into the World Trade Center."

I was horrified to find out it was not, in fact, a movie and that the Pentagon had been hit as well.

Later I started learning of the many friends and acquaintances I'd lost to this act of terrorism. Several members of my undergraduate class were working in the floor that took the initial strike. Thankfully. my friends and acquaintances at the Pentagon got out, only suffering from trauma.

Random Musings: We Are Falling Back

Random Musings on the State of Our World

One Step Forward and Five Steps Back...

We're definitely NOT in a "one step forward" phase, bur rather, we're at like FIVE steps back. And nothing exemplifies THAT like the attack on Salman Rushdie.

Back in the late 80s, Rushdie, an author who primarily writes in the Magical Realism Genre, puts out a book Khomeini dislikes, and so Khomeini calls for Rushdie's murder.  He uses every tactic he can to amass public gatherings where he can incite the minions to take out Rushdie in the most painful manner possible.

Let's see...what else was happening in the late 80s? Homophobia was rampant. Anti choice types were trying to be louder than the pro choicers. We're fighting about "The Defense of Marriage Act." We claimed to be seeking peace, love, and happiness when in reality, hatred and divisiveness were all around us.

Happy Fathers Day

 Happy Father's Day

To All Fathers, Grandfathers, Daughters, and Sons

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Father's Day to all Fathers, Daughters, and Sons, as well as folks who have been there like a father should, for children who are not technically his own!

This will be my first Father's Day without a father to honor. So what follows is a tribute to my Dad, a man who I miss every day. I hope you enjoy reading about a man who touched many during his esteemed life.

My Father was a very special man.  When I was a little girl, my Daddy was my world. As I got older, we drifted apart. As a teenager, we were more distant, and I was sure he didn't understand me one bit. As an older teen, I thought he was stupid and out of touch. As a young adult, he seemed to be gradually getting smarter again. As an older adult, our relationship started to change. He became my dinner companion and my Drinking Buddy. He was my financial advisor and consultant when it came to things like investing and Real Estate. And our mutual respect grew with every passing year.

By the time I was 50, my Father had become one of my Best Friends. I was back to seeing him several times a week. As he aged, our relationship started shifting. He began to depend on me like I had depended on him when I was younger.

Quotes Honoring Juneteenth

Juneteenth Quotes

Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Juneteenth marks the anniversary announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army general Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865, proclaiming freedom for enslaved people in Texas.

"The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere."

Has My Facebook Been Hacked?

Is It a Hack? Or a Different Type of Exploit?

What Causes My Messenger to Spam my Friends?

Recently, I am seeing a spate of folks warning friends their Facebook has been hacked.  This is usually preceded by their account sending out messages to everyone on their Friends list. The user assures everyone s/he has changed his/her password, and thinks s/he has done what is necessary to re-secure the account. But have they really? Unfortunately, the answer is no. Changing a password will ONLY help protect you IF, in fact, someone has discovered your username and password, and has used that information to log into your account. Generally, the first thing someone who hacks your account will do is change your password, and quite possibly the associated e-mail or phone number too, effectively locking you out of your own account.

In this post, we'll review the difference between a "hack" and other types of Facebook Exploits. And we'll review what you NEED to do should you be caught in any type of Facebook Exploit.

Celebrating Pride

 Celebrating Pride:

June is Pride Month

And Pride Is All About Love and Inclusion

This is a month I wish we didn't have to celebrate. And that is because I am dismayed we are still about hate and exclusion in so many ways, despite being well into the 21st Century. I wish we had left the NEED to celebrate Pride back in the 20th Century.

But alas, that is not the reality. In fact, hatred and divisiveness had only gotten worse in "modern times," and especially in 2022. And having been born into a completely different, more accepting culture, this dismays me.

I was born in Greenwich Village in the mid-sixties, a few years before Stonewall. I had many folks who loved me in my life who just happened to be gay from the day I was born. And I never thought anything about that either way.  I did not distinguish between "gay people" and "straight people." To me, they were all just loved ones and dear friends of the family.

Next to my Godfather, "Uncle" Charlie was my favorite adult. Charlie was an old Navy Buddy of my Dad's. He spent a LOT of time with me as a wee child, and I loved him dearly. I never wondered  (or cared) why he always visited with a male friend. I was just happy to see Uncle Charlie and his current friend. Honestly, I was more concerned about my folks allowing Charlie to drive after too many drinks at the party than I was with who he brought with him to that party.

In 1970, my Dad co-produced the play "Gandhi," and Jose Quintero directed. Quintero was a very noted Director, even then. He was from Panama and was estranged from his own family. However, he was really a part of my own for a time, so that was never really a point of concern. Quintero's Dad had wanted him to become a doctor, as well as denounce who he was, or to stay in the closet, at the very least. I knew that estrangement had something to do with his "chosen lifestyle," but I always assumed that meant doing theatre rather than medicine. I never dreamed it could be because of the love and support he got from his life partner, Nicholas. All I cared about was that Quintero was a family friend I cherished and admired.

Later, when I was in middle school, my family temporarily moved to London, where my Dad once again turned to producing as a hobby. This time, he partnered with Mike Mansfield, who is well known as the one who brought the Smoke Machine into Rock and Roll, as well as for being the father of the music video. I loved Mike! And I kind of fell in love with Mike too. He was a physically stunning man, beautiful inside and out. And extremely sought after as well.  Mike took me under his wing, and was one of the first people in my life to treat me like an adult.

Free At Home COVID Tests

MORE Free At Home COVID Tests

US Residents Only

Did you know that you can get free, at home COVID tests from the US Government? They will ship them right to your door, so if you get a breakthrough infection like I did, you do not need to leave your house and potentially expose others to confirm you have COVID, or to confirm when your infection has passed.

Previously, you were limited to two orders, each containing 4 tests. Today, they are allowing you to place a third order. This time, they will send two batches of 4 at home tests, meaning you can get another 8 for free, shipped right to your door.  These are the Rapid Tests. The image above is my own, positive test, which I previously ordered for free, through USPS.

This came right on time for me, as I have been hoarding my last couple at home tests, until I am feeling better, so I do not "waste" the couple I have left. I am currently on Day 12 of my own battle, and I have been warned that Days 12 and 13 are pretty horrible. I can certainly confirm that Day 12 is no fun.

Fytoo Glasses: A Review

The BEST Place to Buy Glasses Online

Fytoo.com

Once upon a time, a teenager got a bad grade in math, a subject she usually did well in. So her mother took her for an eye exam, and the teenager got her very first pair of prescription lenses. Within a decade, she had to wear glasses to drive. Then, when she was in her early thirties, she was in an accident that caused a head injury. That head injury zapped her balance, but miraculously knocked her vision back to near perfect, and for the next 20 or so years, she no longer needed prescription lenses. But as this woman aged, her eyes started getting worse. First, she found herself needing glasses to read. Then she started having issues seeing distances again. By the time she reached her mid-fifties, she was back to needing prescription lenses.

That person is me. I am the one who found herself needing to wear glasses again, after an over twenty year break.  I saw an optometrist, and that optometrist not only recommended glasses, but he told me I needed bifocals.  Prescription in hand, I started looking at glasses online.

I shopped every online outlet I could find, and I was horrified at how much prescription lenses cost these days. Bifocals were especially pricey. I literally spent weeks putting various frames into my cart, and most every outlet wanted about $300 for a pair of prescription bifocals. After two years of  pandemic-related financial hardship, I just did not have $300+ for a pair of glasses.

Then I discovered Fytoo.com.   And I was elated.
